Microsoft Announces Retirement of Access Web Apps
Microsoft Announces Retirement and Shutdown of Access Web Apps and Web Databases in Office 365 and SharePoint Online
Did you hear? Microsoft has announced that Access web apps and Access web databases in Office 365 and SharePoint Online are being retired. More importantly, Microsoft will shut down any remaining Access-based web apps and Access web databases by April 2018. Read Microsoft’s official announcement here.
What Should I Do?
There are several things you should do immediately to prepare for the retirement and shutdown of the Access web apps and web databases in your Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint Online environments.
STEP #1: Turn Off the Creation of New Access Apps in your Office 365 SharePoint Environment
Since Access apps will no longer be supported past April 2018, the first thing you should do is to prevent the creation of new Access apps in your Microsoft Office 365 SharePoint environment by having your admin disable the creation of new Access apps.
For more information on how to do this, click here.
STEP #2: Scan your Office 365 Tenant for the Presence of any Access Apps
Microsoft has provided Office 365 SharePoint admins a free tool to scan for the existence of any Access apps currently deployed in your tenant. This scanning tool produces a report of Access 2010 and 2013 Apps that are present in your tenant, which you can then use to plan for migration.

STEP #3: Plan your Migration of your Access Web Apps and Data
So what should you do if you have Access apps as part of your Office 365 or SharePoint Online solution? Since Microsoft will be shutting down all existing Access-based web apps and Access web databases in Office 365 and SharePoint Online by April 2018, it’s important that you plan and execute your migration of these apps and data before it’s too late.
Microsoft strongly recommends that you consider Microsoft PowerApps as an alternative to building no-code business solutions for the web and mobile devices. Microsoft introduced PowerApps earlier this year with the goal of making it a premiere tool for business solutions – all without learning a programming language such as C#. In addition, there are several ways to migrate data from an Access app to another data source, including exporting the data to SharePoint lists, exporting the data to an Access desktop database, or migrating the data to Microsoft SQL Server.
Knowing how to migrate your Access web apps to PowerApps and knowing which data migration option is best can be challenging. This is where the Imaginet Office 365 and SharePoint Online experts come in. Our certified Office 365 experts are readily available to quickly help you plan and migrate all of your Access web apps and data to Microsoft PowerApps, all while avoiding costly migration mistakes that could cost you time, effort, and energy.
